What is TOGAF 10 and who is it for?
The TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition, is organised into a stable Fundamental Content and a growing Series Guides library for specific topics such as agile, security and digital transformation. Certification suits enterprise, solution and business architects, IT strategists, consultants and senior engineers moving into architecture roles.
Because TOGAF provides a common language for architecture work, it is useful even in organisations that tailor the method heavily. Recruiters often see TOGAF certification as evidence that a candidate can structure architecture engagements, engage stakeholders and govern change across business and IT.
TOGAF certification levels and exam format
The main TOGAF 10 certifications are:
- TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation – a closed-book multiple-choice exam on core concepts and terminology, typically 40 questions in 60 minutes with a 60% pass mark.
- TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner – scenario-based questions with gradient scoring, where each question has a best, second-best and third-best answer. It is usually open book with access to the standard and typically lasts 90 minutes.
The Open Group also offers other TOGAF credentials, such as Business Architecture, and combined exam options. Exam details change, so confirm them in The Open Group's current certification documentation.
Eligibility requirements
Foundation has no prerequisites. Practitioner normally requires Foundation, or you can take a combined exam. Experience is not formally required, but real-world architecture exposure makes the scenarios far easier to interpret. Check current rules and fees before booking.
How to prepare for TOGAF
- Learn the ADM: the Architecture Development Method phases, their objectives, inputs and outputs.
- Understand the content framework and key deliverables, artefacts and building blocks.
- Study governance and the Architecture Repository and how capability is established.
- For Practitioner, practise scenarios and learn to find the right section of the standard quickly.
- Take timed sample papers and review gradient-scored answers.
A useful habit for Practitioner is to ask, for each scenario, which ADM phase the organisation is in and what the main stakeholder concern is. The best answer usually addresses that concern using the appropriate TOGAF technique.
Foundation typically takes 2–4 weeks of study; Practitioner another 3–5 weeks.
