Which AWS certification is right for you?

AWS organises its credentials by level:

  • Foundational: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner for business, sales and new technical staff; AWS Certified AI Practitioner for AI and machine learning fundamentals.
  • Associate: Solutions Architect, Developer, CloudOps Engineer (formerly SysOps Administrator), Data Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer.
  • Professional and Specialty: advanced exams for experienced practitioners.

If you are new to cloud, Cloud Practitioner is a good start. If you already work with AWS, the Solutions Architect – Associate is the most popular next step.

AWS exam format

AWS exams are computer-based and taken at a test centre or online with remote proctoring. Questions are multiple choice and multiple response, and some exams have added newer item types. As a guide, Cloud Practitioner has been 65 questions in 90 minutes, and Associate exams are typically 65 questions in 130 minutes, scored on a 100–1000 scale.

AWS retires and revises exam versions regularly, and several exams have been renamed or updated in 2025–2026. Always download the current exam guide from the AWS Certification website for domains, weightings and the passing score.

Requirements and recommended experience

AWS exams have no formal prerequisites. AWS does publish recommended experience, for example around six months of exposure to the AWS Cloud for Cloud Practitioner and around a year of hands-on experience for Associate exams. Certifications are generally valid for three years, after which you recertify.

How to prepare for an AWS certification

  1. Read the exam guide and list every service and concept in scope.
  2. Get hands-on with a free-tier account and AWS Skill Builder labs, keeping an eye on costs.
  3. Learn the Well-Architected Framework – it underpins many scenario questions.
  4. Practise questions and review why the best answer is the most cost-effective, secure or resilient option.
  5. Take timed practice exams in the final fortnight.

Cloud Practitioner often takes 3–6 weeks; an Associate exam usually 6–12 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Which AWS certification should I get first?

Beginners usually start with Cloud Practitioner. If you already build on AWS, many people go straight to Solutions Architect – Associate.

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam easy?

It is the most accessible AWS exam, but it still covers a wide range of services, billing and security concepts. A few weeks of focused study is sensible.

How long does it take to prepare for AWS Solutions Architect Associate?

Many candidates need 6–12 weeks, depending on hands-on experience. Practical lab work makes the scenario questions much easier.

Are AWS certifications worth it in 2026?

Cloud skills remain in high demand, and AWS certifications are widely recognised by employers. They are most valuable when backed by real project experience.

Can I take an AWS exam online from home?

Yes, AWS exams are generally available online with remote proctoring as well as at test centres. You will need a quiet private room, a reliable connection and a compatible computer, and you must follow the proctoring rules throughout. Run the system check well before exam day.
