What is PRINCE2 and who is it for?

PRINCE2 suits project managers, project support officers, team managers and anyone working on projects in organisations that use the method. Unlike PMP, it does not require proven project experience at Foundation level, which makes it popular with people early in their careers. Many employers in the public sector and in consultancy ask for PRINCE2 Practitioner for project manager roles.

The current version, PRINCE2 7th edition, is built around seven principles, seven practices and seven processes, with added emphasis on people, sustainability and tailoring.

PRINCE2 exam formats

There are two main levels, administered through PeopleCert:

  • PRINCE2 Foundation – a closed-book multiple-choice exam, typically 60 questions in 60 minutes with a 60% pass mark.
  • PRINCE2 Practitioner – an objective-testing exam based on a scenario, typically 70 questions in 150 minutes with a 60% pass mark. You may usually refer to the official PRINCE2 manual during the exam.

Formats, pass marks and permitted materials can change between editions. Always confirm the current details in PeopleCert's official syllabus and candidate guidance.

Eligibility requirements

Foundation has no prerequisites. Practitioner normally requires a pass at PRINCE2 Foundation or another accepted project management qualification, such as PMP or certain IPMA levels. Practitioner certification typically needs renewal, either by re-taking the exam or through continuing professional development. Check the current rules before booking.

How to prepare for PRINCE2

  1. Learn the structure: principles, practices and processes, and how they fit together across a project's life.
  2. Understand roles: the project board, project manager, team manager and project assurance appear constantly.
  3. Practise with the manual (for Practitioner): learn where things are so you can find them quickly under time pressure.
  4. Apply, don't recite: Practitioner questions ask how PRINCE2 should be applied to the scenario.
  5. Take timed sample papers and analyse wrong answers.

Foundation often takes 2–3 weeks of study; Practitioner a further 2–4 weeks.

How FoxyCert's 1-to-1 assistant helps

Your personal assistant on Telegram builds your plan, explains how practices and processes connect, works through scenarios with you, helps you build an efficient manual-navigation routine for Practitioner and reviews your practice papers. All services stay included until you pass, and you sit your own exam.

Frequently asked questions

Is PRINCE2 Foundation hard?

Foundation is generally considered approachable if you learn the terminology and structure. Practitioner is more demanding because you must apply the method to a scenario.

PRINCE2 or PMP: which should I choose?

PRINCE2 is especially common in the UK, Europe and government projects, and Foundation needs no experience. PMP is globally recognised and experience-based. Many professionals eventually hold both.

How long does it take to get PRINCE2 certified?

Foundation and Practitioner together can often be achieved in four to seven weeks of part-time study, depending on your project background.

Is the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam open book?

Typically yes: candidates may use the official PRINCE2 manual. Check PeopleCert's current rules on which edition and materials are permitted.

Is PRINCE2 worth it in 2026?

In regions and sectors that use the method, PRINCE2 remains a common requirement in project roles. Look at job adverts in your target market to judge its value for you.
