Which IELTS test do you need?

IELTS comes in two main versions:

  • IELTS Academic – for university study and some professional registration.
  • IELTS General Training – for work, secondary education and migration to countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

Some UK visa routes require an IELTS test approved for UK visa and immigration purposes, and IELTS Life Skills exists for certain visa categories. Always check exactly which test and minimum band scores your university, employer or immigration authority requires.

IELTS test format

You can usually take IELTS on paper or on computer at a test centre, and the content is the same. The test is generally structured as follows:

  • Listening – about 30 minutes, four recordings, 40 questions
  • Reading – 60 minutes, three sections, 40 questions (texts differ between Academic and General Training)
  • Writing – 60 minutes, two tasks; Task 1 is a data or process description (Academic) or a letter (General Training), Task 2 is an essay
  • Speaking – 11–14 minutes, a face-to-face conversation with a certified examiner in three parts

There is no pass or fail; each skill receives a band score and you receive an overall band. Formats, fees and options such as single-skill retakes vary by country, so check the official IELTS website for your test centre.

Understanding band scores

Writing and Speaking are marked against published band descriptors. For Writing these cover task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Speaking adds fluency and pronunciation. Studying the descriptors is one of the fastest ways to understand what separates, say, a 6.5 from a 7.0.

How to prepare: an IELTS study plan

  1. Take a diagnostic test to find your current band in each skill.
  2. Learn the question types – matching headings, True/False/Not Given, map labelling and more.
  3. Write regularly and get feedback against the band descriptors.
  4. Practise speaking aloud on common Part 2 and Part 3 topics, recording yourself to review fluency.
  5. Build timing with full practice tests in the final weeks.

Improving by half a band to a full band often takes several weeks to a few months of consistent practice.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to prepare for IELTS?

It depends on your starting level and target. Many candidates spend four to twelve weeks on focused preparation; larger jumps in band score take longer.

Is IELTS Academic harder than General Training?

Listening and Speaking are the same. Academic Reading and Writing use more academic texts and tasks, so many people find them more demanding.

How can I improve my IELTS Writing score?

Answer every part of the task, organise paragraphs clearly, use a range of vocabulary accurately and leave time to check grammar. Regular feedback against the band descriptors helps most.

Should I take IELTS on computer or on paper?

The content is the same. Choose the format you are most comfortable with, particularly for Writing, where typing speed matters on computer.

How long are IELTS results valid?

Most institutions accept results for two years, but each organisation sets its own policy, so check with them.
