ISACA AAIA AI Audit Exam Prep with a Personal Assistant

The ISACA Advanced in AI Audit (AAIA) credential is built for experienced auditors who need to provide assurance over artificial intelligence. It covers how to evaluate AI governance, operations and risks, and how auditors can use AI tools responsibly in their own work.

What is AAIA and who is it for?

AAIA, launched by ISACA in 2025, is aimed at IT auditors, internal auditors, assurance managers and risk professionals who already hold a recognised audit credential and are now asked to audit AI systems. It helps auditors move from general IT controls to the specific risks of data, models and automated decisions.

Typical AI audit questions include: who approved this model for use, how was its training data sourced, how is performance monitored after release, and what happens when it produces a harmful or biased result? AAIA prepares you to plan audits around those questions and to report findings that management and boards can act on.

AAIA exam format and domains

ISACA has described the AAIA exam as roughly 90 multiple-choice questions over about two and a half hours. The content covers three domains:

  1. AI Governance and Risk – AI strategy, policies, regulation, ethics and risk management
  2. AI Operations – data management, model development, change management, monitoring and incident response for AI
  3. AI Auditing Tools and Techniques – planning AI audits, testing controls, sampling, evidence and using AI in audit work

As a new credential, details may change. Check the current AAIA exam content outline and candidate guide on the ISACA website before you begin.

AAIA prerequisites

At the time of writing, candidates need an active CISA or one of a small set of other recognised audit or accounting credentials accepted by ISACA. Confirm the current list of eligible credentials, fees and CPE requirements in the official guidance.

How to prepare for AAIA

  • Learn how AI systems work – training data, model types, evaluation metrics and drift.
  • Map AI risks to controls and decide what evidence would show each control is operating.
  • Study relevant frameworks such as the NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001 and applicable AI regulation.
  • Keep the auditor's perspective: independence, risk-based planning and reporting remain central.
  • Practise scenario questions and review explanations carefully.

Experienced CISA holders often prepare in 4–8 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need CISA to take AAIA?

An active CISA is the most common route. ISACA has also accepted certain other audit or accounting credentials, so check the current eligibility list.

Is the AAIA exam hard?

The audit concepts will be familiar to CISA holders. The main challenge is understanding AI operations and model risks well enough to judge the best audit response.

How long should I study for AAIA?

Four to eight weeks of part-time study is common for experienced auditors, more if AI technology is new to you.

Is AAIA worth it in 2026?

Boards and regulators increasingly expect assurance over AI. AAIA is a way for auditors to demonstrate that specialist capability.

How is AAIA different from AIGP?

AIGP from the IAPP focuses on AI governance and is open to anyone. AAIA focuses on auditing AI and builds on an existing audit credential.
